"EDUCATION IS THE SOUL OF A SOCIETY AS IT PASSES FROM ONE GENERATION"

The Girl in the Mirror is a DBL Foundation programme helping young women recognise their worth, own their stories and intentionally shape their futures through storytelling, reflection, mentorship and possibility.
A reflective empowerment experience created to help young women recognise who they are, understand the power of their stories and imagine what their futures could become
Recognise your value, strengths, identity, voice and potential.
Understand that experiences form part of your story — but they do not have to determine your future.
Imagine possibilities, make intentional choices and identify a step towards the future you want.

Sometimes the most important conversation a girl can have is with herself.
The Girl in the Mirror was created around a simple idea: before a young woman can confidently shape her future, she needs opportunities to recognise her own worth.
Adolescence is filled with questions about identity, belonging, ability, appearance, opportunity and the future. For many girls, particularly those growing up in communities where opportunities may not always feel visible or accessible, these questions can become defining.
The programme creates a deliberate space for girls to pause, listen, reflect and imagine.
Through personal storytelling, guided reflection, meaningful conversation and practical activities, participants are invited to look beyond what a mirror can physically show them — and begin recognising their strengths, voice, experiences, choices, dreams and possibilities.
Recognise your value, strengths, identity, voice and potential.
The journey begins by asking each girl to look into a mirror and consider:
“When you look in the mirror… what do you see?”
There is no right answer and no expectation that she shares it. The moment belongs to her.
Understand that experiences form part of your story — but they do not have to determine your future.
Women from different backgrounds and professions share honest stories about their journeys, choices, challenges, lessons and becoming.
After each story, the girls are given time to turn the conversation inward and reflect on their own lives.
Imagine possibilities, make intentional choices and identify a step towards the future you want.
The programme deliberately moves away from the idea that a sixteen-year-old should already have her life figured out.
Instead, girls are encouraged to approach their futures with curiosity rather than fear.
The room became a place of possibility.
Approximately 80 Grade 10 girls came together for a day designed not simply to speak to them, but to create space for them to listen, think, write, question, reflect and participate.
Women from different walks of life shared stories of choices, challenges, resilience, growth, reinvention and possibility. There was no single version of success and no prescribed path the girls were expected to follow.
Instead, every story offered another window into what might be possible.
You do not have to become her. Her story can simply help you imagine yours.
As the day unfolded, the girls moved from listening to the experiences of others to reflecting more deeply on their own.
They wrote. They asked questions. They spoke around their tables. They listened to one another. And slowly, the conversation shifted from “Who could I become?” to something even more important: “What do I see in myself?”
The strength of The Girl in the Mirror lies in making possibility visible.
Our speakers shared more than accomplishments. They shared the journeys behind them, the uncertainty, decisions, setbacks, courage, opportunities and people that helped shape who they became.
Reflection became conversation. Conversation became connection. Connection opened possibility.
Today, I choose to see my strength, courage and worth.
♡ I will own my story, use my voice and never allow others to define me.
♡ I will honour myself, support other girls and boldly shape my future.
♡ I have a voice.
♡ I have a purpose.
♡ I have a future.
♡ I will dream it.
♡ I will believe it.
♡ I will live it.
This is my promise.
This is my power.
This is my pledge.

The Girl in the Mirror was made possible by people and organisations who chose to stand beside our girls. Speakers, facilitators, volunteers, partners, supporters, educators and guests contributed in different ways through their time, expertise, resources, stories, encouragement, presence and belief.

The Girl in the Mirror was never intended to be simply an event. It represents an opportunity to create meaningful experiences for girls across different schools and communities, experiences that combine storytelling, reflection, mentorship, conversation, career exposure and practical tools to help young women explore their identity, choices and aspirations.
The programme can grow through partnerships with schools, organisations, funders, professionals, facilitators and individuals who share our belief in the potential of young women.

Whether you are a school, organisation, funder, speaker, facilitator, volunteer or individual, there is a place for you in this work.
Partner with us. Sponsor a programme. Support a school. Share your story. Help us reach another girl.
